PHILADELPHIA -- Never afraid to raise his fists, Dan Carcillo made his mark in the league as a puncher more than a post-season star. Charlie McAvoy Jersey . Carcillo was a little of both for New York in Game 3. Derek Stepan, Martin St. Louis, Dan Girardi and Carcillo scored goals, leading the Rangers to a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 31 shots to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Game 4 is Friday in Philadelphia. Carcillo, a former Flyer, went eye to eye with a taunting fan after he scored an insurance goal in the third period. He had 100 penalty minutes and only four goals in the regular season -- and wanted to prove he could do more than camp out in the penalty box. "When you get pigeonholed into a role, its hard to change peoples minds in this league," he said. "When you get in and you get an opportunity like this, youve got to make the most of it." Lundqvist was backed by a defence that blocked 28 shots to stymie the Flyers. The Rangers took an early 2-0 lead and that was enough of a cushion for a team that led the Eastern Conference with 25 road victories. "You need to be strong in the middle," Lundqvist said. "It was part of our defence tonight. Thats why we played so well. We got involved all over the ice." Mark Streit scored for the Flyers. Ray Emery struggled in net in his third straight start of the post-season for Steve Mason, and was lifted late in the third period. While all signs point to Mason for Game 4, coach Craig Berube said he has not made a decision. "Ill be ready to go," Mason said. Mason hadnt played since he suffered an upper-body injury in a collision on April 12. He got in this game with 7:15 left and the Flyers down 4-1. Berube said Mason was healthy but went with Emery because of his strong first two games. Emery had 31 saves in a Game 2 win. "Ray just came off a big win. Its not a difficult decision," Berube said. After a rough outing, it seemed liked the wrong one -- right from the start. Rick Nashs shot wide of the net deflected off the bottom of Emerys glove, and Stepan shovelled the puck in for a 1-0 lead only 3:54 into the game. St. Louis made it 2-0 midway through the period with a sharp deflection off Girardis shot from the blue line. The Rangers had two goals on eight shots. Emery settled down and the Flyers finally generated some offensive pressure, even as leading scorer Claude Giroux failed to get going. Giroux, third in the NHL with 86 points, had not shots on goal in the first two games and didnt get one in the first period. He did rush the net late in the first, creating space for Streit to score over Lundqvists stick on a 4-on-4 chance. Giroux finally attempted a shot about 6 1/2 minutes into the second period and the Flyers down 3-1. The captain clearly needs to start scoring for the Flyers to win the series. Hes not alone. "We have to get the pucks through, even move it sideways," Flyers defenceman Kimmo Timonen said. "We have to watch tape and find a way to get them through. We have to find a way to move it around quicker." Girardi fired a clean slapper high from the point over Emerys left shoulder for that 3-1 lead early in the second. Down two goals, Jakub Voracek took out some pent-up frustration on Carl Hagelin with a flurry of punches that sent both players to the penalty box and sent the crowd into a frenzy. Carcillo went after Giroux in the scrum, giving the Flyers the added bonus of a power play. But the Rangers blocked two shots on the power play. The Rangers closed off the shooting lanes with 20 blocked shots through the first two periods. Lundqvist took care of the rest. "Its just a matter if the D is getting involved in the play, and it doesnt matter if its me or anyone else," Girardi said. Carcillo sealed the win with a goal soon after he left the penalty box in the third. Notes: St. Louis had one goal in 19 regular-season games for the Rangers. He has two in the first three playoff games. ... Flyers defencemen have three goals in three games. ... NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman attended. He said the league was close to announcing the teams in next seasons Winter Classic and the league would not stage six outdoor games. He also said Islanders owner Charles Wang has received "a number of expressions of interest" in buying the Brooklyn-bound team. Fans holding laudatory signs started showing up at Yankee Stadium when the gates opened at 4 p.m. Monday, an hour early in order to give them a chance to watch the New York captain take batting practice.PORTLAND, Ore. -- The plan was for Clint Dempsey to go 60 minutes and see how he was feeling less than 72 hours after playing 90 minutes in a U.S. national team exhibition against Mexico. When the one-hour mark arrived, Dempsey and the Seattle Sounders were trailing rival Portland by two goals. He wasnt about to check out. Dempsey scored the first hat trick in his MLS career, including goals in the 85th and 87th minutes to help the Sounders rally late for a wild 4-4 draw with the Timbers on Saturday. "You always feel good when you are contributing, scoring goals or getting assists," Dempsey said. "Im in a good rhythm at the moment and its about continuing that form." Trailing 4-2 for most of the second half after goals from Diego Chara and Maximiliano Urruti early in the half gave Portland the advantage, Dempsey led Seattles stunning late comeback to earn a point in the first Cascadia rivalry matchup of the season. Dempsey scored in the 85th minute to get Seattle within 4-3, a goal that felt was coming with the pressure the Sounders were pushing forward. Seconds later, Seattle defender DeAndre Yedlin was taken down in the penalty box by Portlands Ben Zemanski and referee Hilario Grajeda immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Yedlin said he was hoping to draw a penalty on the play and Zemanski obliged by clipping the young Seattle defender. After a brief discussion with Gonzalo Pineda, who was expecting to take the penalty kick, Dempsey stepped up. He converted the chance, beating former Seattle goalkeeper Andrew Weber to get Seattle even. "That point today felt like more than a point. It kind of felt like a win," Dempsey said. The afternoon was an advertisement for the league, even if it gave the coaches heartburn. Play was wide open and end-to-end. There were 41 shots and countless near misses. There were four goals in the first 25 minutes -- including goals from Seattles Kenny Cooper, Portland Diego Valeri and Dempsey -- along with the two late scores. David Krejci Jersey. And the biggest star on the field burned brightest even if he was a little tired at the end. "Hes a leader. He wants to lead this team. He wants to show that last year was not the Clint Dempsey that were going to see this year," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. "And he wants to show people hes ready for the World Cup. I think he did that today." Seattle walked off thrilled with the final result and knowing there were other missed chances in the final minutes to get a winner. Meanwhile, the Timbers stood stunned as the worst start in their brief history continued. The Timbers have generally been slow starters since joining the league in 2011, but now have just three points after five games, not the opening anyone in Portland expected after reaching the Western Conference finals last season. "You should never give up 4 goals, and you should never tie a game if you score 4 goals," Portland coach Caleb Porter said. Chara was the star until Dempsey took over. On his 28th birthday, Chara scored in MLS play for the first time since September 2011. Seattle defence was willing to give him space and he took advantage with two perfectly placed shots from outside the penalty box. His first goal in the ninth minute deflected off goalkeeper Stephen Freis hand but had enough force to get into the net. His second goal, and what appeared to be the winner, came from about 25 yards and Frei had no chance at the save. Both times, Seattles defenders failed to step up and defend Charas shot. "I feel good, but obviously completely not happy with the game," Chara said. "We should have won that game, so to score 2 goals, for me, is good, but Id rather see a W than me score 2 goals." Urrutis goal in the 57th minute appeared to give Portland plenty of cushion. But Dempsey said otherwise and both sides had to settle for the draw in one of the wilder matchups of a rivalry dating to the mid-1970s.
